Soul Food!

Cornbread, collard greens, macaroni and cheese...

Cornbread, collard greens, macaroni and cheese, fried chicken, yams, and sweet tea. Almost makes me weep for home. This is a place called Hollywood Inn, and I've been going there for about fifteen years. It's just about a block down from the WC Handy home. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

As I mentioned in a previous post that I went to a restaurant that had a soul food night on the menu. What they had on the menu for soul food is spaghetti, ribs, greens, fried chicken, sweet potatoes and of course mac and cheese. The true definition of Soul Food is

soul food

traditional black American cookery, which originated in the rural South, consisting of such foods as chitterlings, pig knuckles, turnip greens, and cornbread.
The foods and techniques associated with the African American cuisine of the United States. The term was first used in print in 1964 during the rise of “black pride,” when many aspects of African American culture-including soul music-were celebrated for their contribution to the American way of life. The term celebrated the ingenuity and skill of cooks who were able to form a distinctive cuisine despite limited means.
When did spaghetti become soul food. I could of swore it originated from Italy. I think people are using the term soul food so loosely. I know black people didn’t create mac and cheese either. Ribs are not part of soul food either. Anyone bought ribs lately they are not cheap.
I think soul food now is synonymous with ghetto or poor people cuisines. I envision in the future soul food will include flaming hot Cheetos, mac and beef, hamburger helper, garlic toasted regular white bread.
Soul food isn’t what it use to be. Also, If we ate soul food like we did back in the day then we all will be suffering from diabetes, heart disease, stroke, high cholesterol.
I am just saying people should stop using the word soul food and just say the food I grew up with.
